Nature's Magic at Cleveland Dam: Moody Skies, Still Waters, and Tranquility
Nestled in the heart of North Vancouver, British Columbia, Cleveland Dam Reservoir — also known as Cleveland Lake — offers a breathtaking sight that feels like stepping into a painting. The dam itself, completed in 1954, holds back the Capilano River, creating a picturesque body of water surrounded by towering evergreens and rugged mountains. But on this particular day, the weather painted a scene of its own.
We visited on a gloomy, drizzly day when the clouds hung low, gently touching the treetops. Some might see rain as a reason to stay inside, but in truth, the mist and fog added an almost magical layer to the landscape. The lake appeared still and mysterious, and the distant peaks seemed to fade in and out of view as if playing hide-and-seek with the clouds. There’s a certain calmness that comes with walking through nature on days like this — the soft sound of raindrops and the cool, fresh air make everything feel more peaceful.
Since the weather wasn’t ideal, we found that we practically had the place to ourselves. There were barely any other visitors, making it feel as if we’d stumbled upon a hidden, untouched world. Standing there, surrounded by the vastness of nature, it was easy to forget the everyday worries that weigh us down. It’s one of those rare moments when you realize just how small you are in the grand scheme of things. The towering trees, endless mist, and still waters remind you that life is much bigger than the problems we carry.
If you ever find yourself in North Vancouver, visiting Cleveland Dam is a must, rain or shine. While sunny days bring out the rich blues and greens of the reservoir, the moody, overcast days add an element of mystery that’s just as beautiful. Plus, it’s a photographer’s dream — every angle offers a unique view, whether you’re capturing the mist clinging to the treetops or the stillness of the water below.
The reservoir is easily accessible and perfect for a short stroll or a picnic with a view. And if you’re feeling adventurous, nearby trails like the Capilano Pacific Trail or a visit to Lynn Canyon Suspension Bridge ($2 recommended donation) offer a chance to explore even more of this stunning area. Just don’t forget to pack a rain jacket — you never know when the Pacific Northwest weather will surprise you!
